How To Zap Those Negative Thoughts

Our minds are filled with tens of thousands of thoughts every day. In his book, “The Happiness Trap”, author Russ Harris suggests that up to 80% of our thoughts are comprised of some type of negative content. That’s a lot of negativity! It wouldn’t be a problem if we processed those thoughts objectively – but we don’t. The real problems start when you begin believing your negative thoughts.

When negative thoughts show up it’s tempting to try to ignore them or push them away. That may offer temporary relief, but it’s a strategy that ultimately backfires and the negative thoughts come back with a vengeance.

It’s time for a more effective approach to clear those negative thoughts once and for all. Here are some negative thought elimination activities:

Test your thoughts for truth. Some common negative thoughts are, “I'm such a loser," "I can't do anything right,” "I don't have what it takes,” “I'm not smart enough."  Pick one of those statements that resonates with you most (or add your own). Now simply ask yourself, “Is this really true?” Absolute statements are rarely, if ever, true.

Ask yourself how the thought is serving you. For example, does telling yourself you’re not smart enough help serve a purpose in your life? If not, it’s time to let that thought go.

Reframe a negative statement into a positive one. For example, turn “I can’t do anything right,” into “I make mistakes sometimes, but I do a lot of things really well too.” Life is never all-or-nothing.

With all the negative thoughts you carry in your head every day it can take a toll on your emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. But you have it within you to challenge those negative thoughts. There’s a lot to be positive about in your life.
